Other Issues in the media

There are many other issues regarding the media in today’s society. Here are some other issues that are needed to address :

  1. http://childrenandmedia.home.blog

This is a huge issue because children are influenced by what they see online. They often think that what they see online is acceptable and tends to copy what they see. The amount of the violence presented in the children

2. https://evaesne.wordpress.com

The next issue is the issue with body images on the media. The social media are constantly bombarding us with the images of the “perfect body” and these can influence young girls and also adults. This can lead to a huge waste of money on plastic surgery in order to look perfect.

3. https://racismintodaysmediaandsociety.wordpress.com/

Another issue in today world is the racism in the media. Racism is still present even nowadays. The media still present us stereotypes even in the news. We are still confronted with the news in which the main suspects are the black community. This is another issue that has to be stopped.

4. https://socialmedianditsimpactoneducation.wordpress.com

This blog deals with the issue of how the media or in this case social media influence children’s academic success. This an issue because the more the children spend time online the more their grades at school decreases. Some schools want to limit their online time during the breaks or even in the faculty as well.

5.   https://crimeandmedia.home.blog/

This blog deals on how the media plays a role in crimes. We know that media could be a way for the investigators to solve crimes but as we know the display of crime in the media could have some negative aspects that they could represent the crime as a  distorted incident picture.

What Experts Say 2

According to Women Media center, during the FIFA Women’s world Cup in 2015 , the amount

of people watching hit the record of 750 million viewers. They think that women should be

given equal amount of coverage as the male concerning the sports. This coverage has decreased

since 1989. The University of South Caroline has made an study called “ It’s Dude Time” that

analyzed 25 years of sports of media coverage and it was discovered that woman received less

coverage in 2014 than in 1989. Only less than one percent of media coverage in 2014 included

women athletes and only 2 percent of women was featured in ESPN Sports Center.

The percent of men athletes that was covered was 75% even if no one the games were played

at the time of this study.

Michael Messner , the one of the researchers and also professor of Sociology thinks that a lack

Of women coverage is demonstrating uneven social change.

He said that his findings that : “We’ve had this incredible explosion of girls and women going into sports in the last 40 years, and we’ve seen some improvement in the last 10 years in live TV coverage of some women’s sports, like college basketball,”

Studies are like this show that if a woman achieve full participation , the media coverage is still

problematic and it is nowhere near parity. A reality that needs to change.

What Experts Say 1

According to  Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, the media should provide

more equal coverage of female athletes.

“The fight for equality between women and men is central to our work, .Only 4% of sports

media content is dedicated to women’s sport. Only 12% of sports news is presented by

women.” , said Azoulay.

UNESCO was launching an awareness- raising campaign to denounce the differences

between the media coverage of male and female athletes that is also going to be inspired

by real sports moments that would also draw attention to the stereotypes and also lack of

recognition that all the women athletes are subject to. They are currently in search of

interviews with some of the most known legends who are willing to improve diversity,

and respect between men and women in order to make peace and diversity among

men and women in the world of the media.

Current event 2

The case of Alize Cornet a French tennis player who was another victim of sexism in the tennis

industry who was penalized for briefly taking off her shirt. The US Open organizers expressed

“regret” for the way she was treated at the match

Cornet realized that she was wearing her shirt in the wrong way during the 10 minutes break

between the second and third set against Sweeden tennis player Johanna Larson. Cornet was

running late from the court when she was surprised when they handed her a code violation by

the chair umpire Christian Rask. This caused a huge backlash on the social media when Judy

Murray, a former tennis player and the mother of the top English player Andy questioned

the double standards where at work of men and women. “Alize Cornet came back to court after

10 minute heat break, Had her fresh shirt on back to front. Changed at back of court. Got a code

violation. Unsportsmanlike conduct … But the men can change shirts on court.”, was tweeted

by the mother of the Andy Murray.

This again shows the issue with the media and their representation of female athletes .

The  issues are slowly dissapearing from our world but it would take time  until those

issue would be solved

Current Event 1

The current that is going be discussed is the scandal of the tennis player Serena Williams during one

of her matches when she was playing against the Japan tennis player named Osaka.

During the match, Serena made several code violations that she claimed was unfair.  All the

violations that were fined in the total of $17,0000 for only three violations.

Serena Williams ended up calling the umpire Carlos Ramos for being sexist. Like it was mentioned

, she was fined 3 violations, the first being for the warning for coaching, the second being for

smashing her own racket following a game penalty for verbal abuse.  The umpire according to

Williams treated her harshly than the male tennis players , she then decided to host a press

conference to double down on her earlier on court tirade.  At the media conference, Serena

Williams declared “ I’m here fighting for women’s rights and for women’s equality and for all

kinds of stuff. For me to say ‘thief’, and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a

sexist remark. He’s never taken a game from a man because they said ‘thief’.” From this event

we can see that with the case that the media did not focus on the results of the match but on the

Serena Williams fight with the umpire. She made a point saying that this would never happen to

male tennis players as the males are still considered to be dominate in the sports and superior to

women . This is still a huge issue in the sports as the media focus on the male winning trophies

and on their achievements , some issues are being solved but some of them still remain. There

were many more scandals involving the top female tennis players as the media focused on the

way they dressed for the match. Many female tennis players supported Williams and backed her

up like for example the two times Australian Champion Victoria Azarenka sided by Williams by

making a statement on the social media platform Twitter saying : If it was men’s match, this

wouldn’t happen like this. It just wouldn’t”

This event relates to the problem of media and women’s sport because on how the media

portray the women , it mostly focuses on the women’s clothing and on the scandals while

giving the male more coverage and more respect that they do for the women in general.

Academic Essay

The portrayal of women in sports

Nowadays, the image of women in sports is currently slowly improving but there are still some

major issues with the global image of women in the media. They are still viewed as being

less dominate comparing to males that are still the dominate genre in the sports media.

Males are the one that get more attention in the news coverage more than women.

everybody are constantly bombarded with heroic pictures of males athletes than heroic

images of women athletes. When the media decided to focus on females athletes, they

Will mostly be interested by their appearance and their clothing. For example , the case

of the tennis player Maria Sharapova , who receives more attention about her looks and

her clothing rather about her ability to play tennis. According to Schonberger (2012) ,

Forbes a published an article in the year 2010 on the highest paid women athletes. Once \

again Maria Sharapova wins the title of one of the most pain women athletes . Women’s

tennis is arguably the most commercially popular and successful among all women’s

sports because it is an individual sport that draws a greater percentage of male followers

than other women sports. According to a research , media has the power to shape the

public values and beliefs. (Kane 1988; Dyer 1993). Media can influence the public

views and that the media emphasizes a certain aspect of the female sport and then ignoring

other aspects of the sports including women. ( Higgs, Weiller, Martin 2003).  The sports

industry plays a significant role in the negative portray of female athletes. It can do it

trough the use of sexist language , objectification. In the case of the Olympic Games , the

sportswomen throws more spotlight on the women , they get more coverage during

the games but the male is still the dominate one like it was mentioned earlier. The sport

industry has been operating in other to define masculinity and femininity but it’s the

male excellence that has been encouraged but the femininity is often viewed as

suspicions. There are also many barriers as for example time pressure , body images

concerns , disapproval among certain cultures , family responsibilities and also financial

cost as well.

According to yougov.com, the reasons why women’s sports receive less attention than men

Is because men’s sports have greater tradition. Men’s sports represent 25% of the media and

women’s covers only 24 % of the coverage. Another reason is sexism, 13 % is women’s sexism

comparing to the male that is only 10%. Media think that the quality of play is better with males is 24 %

but for women only 5% in June 2015.

In 1972 , the US congress passed an act titled IX of the Omnibus Education act mandated

equal federal funding opportunities towards female and male students in higher education

which increased and encouraged girls and women to participate in sports. It also made women

more involved and more competitive in sports. As mentioned the issues are still present even

today as female athletes faces certain obstacles. The media is deciding the women and men by

believing that men are destined to only be involved in men’s sports like basketball , football and

so on and that women should only be practicing women types of sports like ice skating or

gymnastics.  Female athletes gets acceptance if they focus only on feminine sports and in case

they are trying to participate in a men sports , they would be questioned of their own sexuality.

To conclude , women in sport are still remain until today as inequal to men but there is

huge progress in that field but some of the issues still are significantly present. Women’s

sport is still less covered in the media than the male’s sport which is still considered to

be dominated in the sports. What can we do in order to change this issue ?

Introduction Post

Media and the portray of a woman in sports

This blog will deal with the issues of the image that the media is giving about the woman in the sports to the public. It will also compare how the woman was portrayed in the past and how they are portrayed now. Over the years, the image of a sportswoman has changed, before the woman was not viewed as equal to men and it was considered wrong for her to have the same opportunity in the sports and in the carrier path. My aims for this blog is to explain the main issues that the women are facing or did face as successful sportswomen. We are going to support these issues by posting some videos dealing with these serious issues and by also news talking about famous sports from the past and some news portraying the woman now. We are going to compare the past and the present. We are going also explore some academic articles dealing with the same issues and even some pictures and possible interviews. Nowadays the issues are starting to slowly disappear with the new generations but it is still not fully resolved. Many sports are not yet available for a woman or in other words some sports activities are not yet made for women. This is gonna be mainly talked about in this blog and some other related issues to the topic that is gonna be discussed using two current events that happened recent years with top women that are successful in their specific sports lie for example recent scandal of Serena Williams and more.
